gridlock

A condition of total, interlocking traffic congestion on the streets or highways of a crowded city, in which no one can move because everyone is in someone else's way.

gridlock: when every route leads nowhere

Gridlock occurs when vehicle queues intersect and interlock across multiple intersections simultaneously, preventing any vehicle from moving in any direction. Unlike ordinary congestion where traffic crawls forward, gridlock is a total standstill: vehicles occupy the physical space of intersections they need to cross, so crossing traffic cannot proceed, which in turn blocks the vehicles behind them. The result is a cascade of immobility spreading across an entire network.

The condition typically emerges in dense urban street grids during peak hours, particularly where arterial routes converge or where signal timing creates surges of traffic from one direction. A single blocked intersection or incident can trigger it: one stalled vehicle blocks a crossing street, which backs up traffic on a parallel route, which then blocks the original street's next intersection. Within minutes, several city blocks become frozen.

Prevention and Response

Traffic engineers combat gridlock through signal coordination that prevents vehicles from entering intersections they cannot clear, through reversible lane designations that shift capacity to peak directions, and through demand management such as congestion pricing during peak periods. Real-time monitoring systems detect early warning signs: when queue lengths exceed the distance to the next intersection, signals can be adjusted or traffic rerouted before full gridlock sets in.

Logistics and delivery operations are particularly vulnerable to gridlock costs. A vehicle stuck in gridlock is not moving goods; routes that work at off-peak hours may be impossible during congested periods. The term's grid metaphor is apt: it describes both the Manhattan street pattern where the problem is most visible and the interlocking, chess-like impossibility of the situation itself, where moving any single piece requires moving all the others.
