A grinding machine uses a rotating abrasive wheel to remove material from a workpiece with high precision and fine surface finish. Unlike a lathe or milling machine that use cutting edges, a grinding wheel consists of thousands of tiny abrasive particles (usually aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, or ceramic) bonded into a wheel matrix. The wheel spins at speeds between 1,200 and 3,600 rpm for surface grinding, or much faster for cylindrical grinding, and material is removed through repeated micro-cuts rather than one decisive chip.

Grinding machines fall into several families by their geometry and application. Surface grinders have a flat wheel that moves across a horizontal worktable; cylindrical grinders rotate the workpiece against a wheel to grind shafts, pins, and bores; tool and cutter grinders sharpen cutting tools; and centerless grinders support the workpiece on a blade while the grinding wheel and regulating wheel shape it without spindle centers. Each type is designed for different stock removal rates and tolerance bands.

Wheel selection and dressing

The abrasive wheel is the critical consumable. Grain size, bond type, hardness grade, and wheel structure determine how the machine performs on specific materials. A coarse wheel (24 to 36 grit) removes stock quickly but leaves a rougher surface; a fine wheel (120 to 220 grit) produces superior finish but slower material removal. The wheel must be dressed periodically to expose fresh abrasive and restore geometry, using a dressing tool or diamond dresser. Improper dressing causes heat buildup, workpiece burning, and chatter.

Thermal stress is a constant hazard in grinding. The friction between wheel and workpiece generates heat that can anneal hardened steel, soften tempered components, or crack brittle materials like cast iron if cooling is inadequate. Most grinding operations use a coolant flow to dissipate heat and flush away swarf. Water-soluble coolants are common, though some precision work uses oils. The operator must monitor surface temperature and coolant condition closely.

Grinding is the finishing operation in most metal shops: after turning, boring, or milling, parts are ground to achieve tight tolerances (often 0.0005 to 0.001 inch) and superior surface finish (8 to 32 microinches Ra). It is also used to sharpen tools, recycle oversized components by removing hard coatings, and size parts on production runs. Skilled grinding operators develop a feel for wheel behavior and heat signature through experience, as small changes in feed rate or wheel condition have outsized effects on part quality.
