ground

An electrical conductor connected to the earth, or a large conductor whose electrical potential is taken as zero (such as a steel chassis).

ground: your zero-volt reference point

In electrical systems, ground is a deliberate connection to earth or to a large conductive mass whose voltage is defined as zero. This serves as the reference point against which all other voltages in the system are measured. Without it, voltage becomes meaningless, because voltage is always relative, a potential difference between two points. By anchoring one point to ground, every other point's voltage can be stated as a single number rather than as a difference.

In power distribution, the earth itself acts as this conductor. A copper rod or plate is driven into the soil at a substation or building entrance, creating low-resistance contact with the ground. The electrical code typically requires this contact to have resistance below 25 ohms, sometimes lower depending on soil conditions and system fault current. In portable or indoor equipment, a steel chassis or internal conductor serves the same role without needing to touch soil.

Ground serves two critical functions. First, it gives a safe place for fault current to flow if insulation fails. If a live wire touches a metal enclosure, a ground connection provides a low-impedance path that allows protective devices like circuit breakers to detect and interrupt the fault quickly. Second, it minimizes the potential difference between conductive objects in an installation, reducing shock hazard. Without proper grounding, a person touching two unequal voltages could experience dangerous current through the body.

Variants and applications

Electrical systems use several related concepts. The utility or service entrance ground connects the power company's transformer secondary to earth. Equipment ground bonds metal enclosures and frames to the same potential. Signal ground in control circuits provides a low-noise reference for measurement and communication. Floating systems (ungrounded), found in some high-reliability equipment or medical devices, intentionally avoid a direct ground connection to maintain isolation, but require different protective measures such as insulation monitoring.

The term comes from the physical earth itself, which was chosen as the reference point because it is large, always present, and relatively stable in voltage. In older usage, a return path in a circuit is still sometimes called ground even when no actual earth connection exists, a legacy terminology that persists in aircraft, vehicles, and other systems where a chassis or structure serves the purpose instead.
