Machine circular knitting, used in hosiery production, uses a cylinder of needles arranged radially; yarn feeds continuously around the circle, and finished fabric descends as a tube. Hand knitting in the round works similarly but with the operator moving the working yarn around the needle tips in each row.
Common variants and gauge challenges
Circular needles come in diameters from 40 cm to 120 cm or longer; the cable length must match the circumference of the piece being knitted, or stitches bunch and tension becomes uneven. Working too tightly on needles that are too short is a frequent source of frustration.
