An inferior is a character, numeral, or symbol printed below the baseline of regular text. Unlike superscripts which sit above, inferiors drop below the line and are typically smaller than the surrounding type. Common uses include chemical formulas (H2O), footnote markers in some systems, and mathematical notation. The term comes directly from the Latin for "lower" and describes their literal position on the printed page.
In metal type composition, inferior characters require dedicated sorts cast at a smaller size and positioned on a lower body. Digital typography handles this through font metrics: the character is scaled down and its baseline offset downward within the em square. Most professional typefaces include a full set of inferiors for numerals 0 through 9, though full alphabetic sets are rarer and usually limited to specific technical applications.
Technical considerations in production
When composing text with inferiors, the horizontal spacing must be tight to avoid ugly gaps. In letterpress work, inferior sorts sit in a slightly recessed position in the chase so they receive less impression; over-inking will cause them to print visibly darker. In offset lithography and digital printing, inferiors present no pressure problem but can appear fuzzy if the font lacks proper hinting or if output resolution falls below 1200 DPI.
Inferiors differ from subscripts in scope: subscripts are a typographic function applied to any character via software, while inferiors are precast or pre-designed sorts built into the font itself. A quality typeface will have metrics that prevent inferiors from colliding with descenders on the line below. Careless implementation can create readability issues, especially in technical documentation where precision in chemical or mathematical notation is critical.
In contemporary practice, true inferiors are less common than they were during the hot-metal era. Most software renders subscripts algorithmically rather than using dedicated glyphs, which is faster but sometimes less optically refined. For publications demanding professional appearance, particularly scientific or pharmaceutical printing, specifying a typeface with native inferior characters remains the preferred choice.
