An island platform is a railway platform with running lines on both sides, allowing trains to load and unload passengers on either face simultaneously. This contrasts with a side platform, which has track on only one side. The central position means a single structure can serve two independent routes or directions of travel, making it economical for high-traffic stations.
Island platforms appear most commonly in underground railways and modern metro systems, where space is constrained and throughput is critical. London Underground, Paris RATP, and Tokyo Metro all use them extensively. The platform itself must be sturdy enough to support passenger loads and equipment on both sides without deflection. Width typically ranges from 5 to 8 metres to accommodate waiting crowds and safety barriers, though some older installations are narrower.
The main operational challenge is managing passengers moving between lines. Platform screen doors, now standard on most new metro systems, address the hazard of people stepping onto the wrong track. Without them, staff must carefully control passenger flow and ensure no one misses their train and wanders across. Some older island platforms in commuter rail systems operate with minimal safety barriers, relying instead on careful scheduling and passenger awareness.
Island platforms require careful electrical earthing and drainage design, since water can collect between the two track beds. Track geometry must be precise on both sides to prevent uneven wear. The platform itself is typically reinforced concrete, sometimes with embedded steel beams to handle the structural loads at the central span.
The term reflects the platform's literal island status: it stands surrounded by tracks rather than backed by land or a building. In contrast, a peninsula platform is attached to a platform building on one end. Island platforms are central to modern metro design, but their use in mainline railways remains limited by signalling complexity and the difficulty of managing mixed-speed traffic on parallel lines.
