Isohume: a map line through equal coal moisture zones

An isohume is a contour line drawn across a coalfield map to connect points where the coal seam contains identical moisture content by weight. Like an isobar on a weather map or an isotherm in geology, it reduces a spatially variable property to discrete zones. In coal exploration and resource assessment, isohumes help miners and engineers predict how seam quality will change across a mining lease or proposed development area.

Coal's moisture content is not uniform. It varies with depth, proximity to surface fractures, groundwater flow patterns, and the host rock's permeability. A shallow seam near the water table may contain 8 to 12 percent moisture, while the same seam 300 metres deeper might hold only 3 to 5 percent. Mapping these variations with isohume networks allows mine planners to identify wet zones requiring additional dewatering infrastructure and drier zones where extraction may be more economical.

Application in reserve estimation and mine design

Isohumes are constructed from core sample data gathered during exploration drilling. As each borehole yields moisture measurements at different depths and locations, geologists interpolate between points to draw the contour lines. The resulting map becomes part of the pit design and resource modelling process. A mineable coal reserve is not simply a tonnage figure; it is tonnes with a known moisture profile. Higher moisture seams may require thermal drying or blending with lower-moisture coal before sale, affecting the economic viability of extraction.

The term itself combines the prefix iso, meaning equal, with hume, from the Latin humidus, meaning damp. It was adopted in German mining literature and entered English technical usage during the mid-twentieth century as coalfield mapping became more sophisticated. Today it remains standard in European coal geology but is less common in Anglophone mining regions, where simpler terms like 'moisture contour' or 'moisture band' often appear in reports instead.

Isohume mapping is particularly important in thick coal measures where a single seam may span hundreds of metres vertically or where multiple seams are worked from a single operation. Moisture variation can affect coal rank classification, calorific value, and ash content; accordingly, isohume data informs both resource classification and coal quality blending strategies in mine operations.
