IVIS: the dashboard computer that runs your car's digital life

An in-vehicle information system is the integrated electronics platform that manages infotainment, navigation, climate control, and driver assistance functions from a single touchscreen or voice interface. It sits at the centre of modern car cabin technology, replacing the era of separate radio, sat-nav, and climate units with a unified digital brain that communicates with engine management, safety systems, and external networks.

Most IVIS installations run proprietary operating systems developed by automotive suppliers like Bosch, Harman, or Visteon, though some manufacturers now use Android Automotive or Linux variants. The hardware typically includes a central processing unit (often ARM-based), between 4 and 8 gigabytes of RAM, and flash storage ranging from 32 to 128 gigabytes. Display sizes have grown from 7-inch screens in the 2010s to 10 to 15-inch touchscreens in current models, sometimes spanning the full width of the dashboard.

Connectivity and integration

Modern IVIS systems integrate vehicle sensors and actuators through Controller Area Network (CAN) buses, allowing the system to monitor tyre pressure, fuel level, engine diagnostics, and transmission behaviour. They connect to smartphones via Bluetooth or USB for calls, messages, and app mirroring (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto). Increasingly they support LTE or 5G for over-the-air updates, cloud-based services, and real-time traffic data. Some systems accept input from driver monitoring cameras or occupancy sensors that feed into safety algorithms.

Common failure points include touchscreen responsiveness loss due to electrical noise from high-voltage systems, software crashes requiring hard resets, and connectivity dropouts when CAN bus communication degrades. Aftermarket IVIS units fitted to older vehicles often struggle with CAN integration on models not designed for retrofit, leading to incomplete instrument cluster updates or loss of steering wheel control functions.

The term IVIS originated in the 1990s when automotive manufacturers began consolidating display and control functions. It remains a generic industry label, though individual manufacturers brand their systems differently: BMW calls theirs iDrive, Audi uses MMI, and Tesla refers to its central display as the "touchscreen". In European and Asian markets, IVIS is the standard technical term used in service bulletins and regulatory documentation.
