jack-knife: when a truck folds on itself
A jack-knife occurs when the tractor unit and semi-trailer lose directional alignment and the trailer swings sideways, causing the tractor and trailer to form an acute angle, often approaching 90 degrees. The combination locks up and becomes uncontrollable, skidding across the road surface. The name comes from the visual analogy: the articulated vehicle bends like a folding jack-knife blade. This is an acute safety hazard that can block multiple lanes, cause pile-ups, and result in vehicle rollover or ejection of cargo.
The fundamental cause is loss of traction between the trailer wheels and the road surface while the tractor maintains grip. This imbalance creates a rotational force. Common triggers include braking on ice or wet pavement, sudden steering inputs, uneven weight distribution in the trailer, excessive speed on curves, or mechanical failure of the trailer's brake system. Inexperienced drivers who brake hard while turning, or who fail to account for the trailer's longer stopping distance, are particularly vulnerable. Fully loaded trailers carrying high-density cargo are at greater risk due to higher axle loads and momentum.
Prevention relies on matching speed to surface conditions, avoiding sudden braking and steering combined, maintaining proper tire tread and pressure, and ensuring even cargo weight distribution. Modern tractor units with anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) substantially reduce jack-knife risk by preventing wheel lockup and moderating brake force to individual axles. Trailers equipped with ABS are also critical. Drivers must understand that a loaded trailer requires significantly longer stopping distances than an empty one, and that the trailer follows a tighter path than the tractor through turns.
Once a jack-knife begins, the driver faces seconds of rapidly deteriorating control. The standard emergency response is to ease off the brakes, straighten the wheels, and allow the vehicle combination to regain directional alignment before carefully decelerating. Aggressive counter-steering typically worsens the situation. Recovery depends heavily on available road surface area, speed, and whether other vehicles are in the path.
Jack-knife incidents are recorded in accident databases and fleet safety metrics because they frequently result in multiple-vehicle collisions, highway closures, and significant liability. Insurance underwriters track jack-knife frequency as a performance indicator for driver training effectiveness and vehicle maintenance standards. The term is used colloquially by drivers and dispatchers; regulators and safety agencies typically use more formal terminology such as articulation loss of control or jackknife skid.
