jigger: a surveyor's angle-measuring instrument
A jigger is field slang for a theodolite or total station, the precision instrument used to measure angles and distances across a survey. The term is most common among surveyors and construction workers who set out and verify building lines, property boundaries, and grade elevations. Both the older optical theodolite and the modern electronic total station (which combines theodolite, distance meter, and data logger) are called jiggers in the trade, though the word originally referred specifically to the theodolite.
The theodolite itself works by rotating a telescope around a vertical axis while reading angles on a graduated circle; a vertical component allows measurement of height angles as well. A total station automates this: it measures both horizontal and vertical angles electronically, calculates the distance to a reflective prism using infrared light, and records coordinates directly. Both instruments mount on a tripod over a known point and require precise leveling before use.
The origin of jigger for this instrument is not documented with certainty, but it likely derives from the verb form meaning to adjust or manipulate, since setting up and sighting the instrument involves fine adjustment of the eyepiece and slow-motion screws. The term persists even though total stations are far more automated than their predecessors, partly because it is shorter than saying "total station" on a busy site.
Jiggers are essential to any project requiring accuracy: a construction crew setting foundation lines, a utility locator verifying easements, a civil engineer establishing grade control. At typical construction distances of 30 to 150 metres, a quality theodolite or total station can resolve angles to 5 seconds of arc or better, translating to linear accuracy of roughly 7 millimetres per 100 metres. Electronic total stations also eliminate human reading error and speed data collection dramatically.
The main failure modes are tripod instability, atmospheric refraction over long sight lines, and loss of calibration if the instrument is dropped or exposed to temperature swings. Most sites now use total stations because they reduce fieldwork time and integrate directly with CAD; the jigger remains the standard tool whether operators call it that or not.
