A jigman runs a jigger, a machine that moves cloth back and forth through a vat of dye liquor. The cloth is wound onto rollers or beams at each end of the machine, and the jigman controls the reciprocating motion that pulls it through the hot dye bath, typically for 30 minutes to several hours depending on the fiber and depth of shade required. The work demands close attention to temperature, liquor ratio, and cycle timing to achieve level color across the full width and length of the piece.

The jigger itself is a simple but powerful piece of equipment: two rollers at opposite ends of a vat, with the cloth threaded between them and a heating system to maintain dye temperature. As the cloth moves forward and backward, fresh dye liquor is exposed to previously wetted fibers, promoting even absorption. The operator must watch for creasing, tangling, or uneven wetting, and adjust tension and speed to prevent defects.

Jiggers come in various widths, from 54 inches up to 160 inches or more for industrial production. Some are equipped with automatic programming that controls the number of forward and backward strokes, while older machines require manual operation. Modern jigging may also include liquor circulation systems and chemical dispensing, which reduces the jigman's need to hand-measure dyes but increases the need for precision in setup.

The job demands practical chemistry knowledge. A jigman must understand how different fibers, yarn counts, and dye classes behave in hot water, and recognize when the liquor is exhausted or when pH or temperature have drifted enough to ruin a batch. Poor exhaustion, uneven shade, or crocking (dye rubbing off) are common failures, often traceable to operator error in temperature control or cycle timing rather than to machine fault.

Jigman work is rooted in textile tradition and remains common in mills that produce cotton, wool, and synthetic yarn dyed goods. The title itself, with its old trade-craft suffix, reflects the specialized nature of the role and the years of experience needed to develop real proficiency.
