A keyset is a compact input device with a small fixed number of keys, typically between two and twelve, that generate different commands or characters depending on which keys are pressed alone or in combination. Unlike a standard keyboard where each key produces one fixed output, a keyset relies on chord inputs, meaning two or more keys pressed simultaneously create a single instruction. This makes it possible to access dozens or even hundreds of distinct functions from very few physical buttons.
Keysets fall into two main categories. The first is the chorded keyset, used in specialized industrial control, telecommunications, and data entry. A five-key or six-key chord keyboard can encode 31 or 63 separate commands respectively, making it far more compact than a full keyboard while maintaining single-hand operation. The second is the function keyset, a subset of dedicated keys on a larger device, such as the twelve programmable keys on some industrial terminals or the numeric pad with modifiers on laboratory instruments. These are often found on oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and CNC machine control panels.
The real constraint of a keyset is learning and muscle memory. Since the mapping is arbitrary, operators must memorize which combinations produce which outputs. This makes keysets best suited to skilled, repetitive tasks where the operator uses the same device daily. A data-entry clerk using a chorded keyset for postal codes or insurance codes becomes very fast; a casual user will struggle. Simultaneous key press detection requires electrical circuitry to sense multiple contacts closed at once, which introduces debounce complexity that a traditional keyboard avoids.
In modern practice, keysets are rarer than they were in the 1970s and 1980s, when they were standard on teleprinter terminals and some minicomputer consoles. However, they persist wherever space is at a premium and reliability matters: some aviation avionics, military communications equipment, and ruggedized industrial terminals still use chording. The name reflects their design philosophy: a set of keys that work as a unified system, not as individual buttons. Their continued niche existence is evidence that the one-key-one-function paradigm does not always serve the user or the engineer best.
