The kilokelvin (kK) is a metric unit of absolute temperature equal to 1,000 kelvins. It appears in metrology and materials testing wherever furnace temperatures, thermal processes, or radiation signatures are measured in the thousands of kelvins. The symbol is kK. Because a kelvin is already quite small relative to industrial heat sources, the kilokelvin offers a cleaner way to express extreme temperatures without trailing zeros or scientific notation.
A kilokelvin equals 726.85 degrees Celsius, or roughly 1,340 degrees Fahrenheit. At 1 kK, materials begin to glow visibly red; at 2 kK they emit yellow light; at 3 kK and beyond, the color shifts toward white. These temperatures are routine in arc furnaces, crucibles for metal casting, laboratory muffle furnaces, and thermal processing chambers. Spectral analysis and pyrometry often report results in kilokelvin units when measuring the color temperature of hot bodies.
Use in standards and calibration
Kilokelvin appears in calibration standards for temperature sensors used above 1,273 K (1 kK). Fixed-point blackbody furnaces, tungsten strip lamps, and standardized heat sources are specified in kilokelvin values in ISO and NIST guidance. An optical pyrometer or infrared thermometer used to check furnace performance will often display its reading in kK when operating in the range above 1,000 K, especially in European and Japanese industrial practice.
The unit's main advantage is brevity in technical documents and readiness for calculation. A furnace at 1.8 kK is immediately understood as 1,800 K without mental conversion. It also sits naturally between the kelvin (used for ambient and cryogenic work) and the megakelvin (used rarely, mainly in astrophysics and plasma physics). In most industrial contexts, however, the kelvin remains dominant; kilokelvin is most common in high-temperature materials research, heat treatment certification, and furnace commissioning reports.
