Knitting describes the overhead electrification equipment (OHLE) that supplies power to electric trains and trams, specifically when the wires become twisted, crossed, or sagged in a way that looks like knotted yarn. The term is rail slang, used by drivers, maintenance crews, and signallers to describe both the hardware itself and the mess that occurs when contact wires, messenger wires, and dropper cables fail to sit cleanly in their catenary. A train cannot operate safely under knitted wires because the pantograph (the collector arm on the roof) cannot maintain proper electrical contact.

The actual OHLE system comprises several components working as one. The main catenary wire carries mechanical load and hangs between metal poles spaced typically 40 to 60 metres apart. Below this sits the contact wire, which rides at a fixed height and is the actual conductor that the pantograph touches. Dropper wires connect the contact wire to the catenary at regular intervals, usually every 1.5 to 2 metres. On some lines, a messenger wire (auxiliary catenary) runs above to reduce sag in the main catenary. All these elements must maintain precise geometry: the contact wire height is critical, usually between 5 and 6.5 metres depending on the rail system, and lateral deviation must stay within millimetres.

Knitting occurs for several reasons. High wind can blow contact wires into each other, especially on long unsupported spans or at changes in track direction. Broken dropper wires leave sections of contact wire unsupported, causing it to sag and tangle with the catenary above. Ice accumulation adds weight and changes the tension balance. Wear in the contact wire (which is consumable and grooves from pantograph contact) can cause it to slip sideways. Poor adjustment during installation or after maintenance is a common cause; the contact wire must sit at precisely the right height and offset from the catenary or it will drift into contact over time.

Detection and Response

Drivers spot knitting immediately because electrical arcing or loss of contact triggers warning systems on the train. Maintenance crews use visual inspection from lineside and sometimes photographs taken from moving trains to identify problem areas. Once knitting is detected, the line must be closed to traffic. Repair involves either re-tensioning the wires to restore proper geometry, replacing damaged dropper wires or contact wire sections, or in severe cases, removing ice load or debris that triggered the tangle. Modern OHLE systems sometimes include tension monitoring equipment at support structures to give early warning of geometric drift.

The slang term 'knitting' is especially common in British and European rail operations where OHLE systems are universal. It conveys immediately to any railway worker that the overhead is compromised and unsafe without needing technical jargon. The term reflects the visual reality: wires that should run parallel and clean instead look hopelessly knotted.
