In wrought iron production, knobbling is the process of reheating and manipulating semi-refined puddled iron on a furnace hearth to drive out remaining slag and gases before the metal is ready for shingling. The puddled iron arrives at the knobbling hearth as a spongy, pasty mass containing significant pockets of silicate slag. Repeated heating to around 1200°C and mechanical working with hand tools or a hammer compacts the metal, squeezes out more slag, and begins to consolidate the iron into a denser, more uniform state.
The term likely derives from the knobbly or lumpy appearance of the semi-refined iron as it comes from the puddling furnace. The knobbler works the heated charge, turning it, folding it, and beating it to manipulate slag distribution and densification. This is skilled manual work: the operator must judge temperature by color, understand how the metal behaves under the hammer, and know when the batch is ready to move to the shingling rolls. Poor knobbling leaves voids and slag inclusions that will weaken the final wrought iron bar.
Knobbling occupies a specific place in the wrought iron sequence. Puddling converts cast iron to a pasty state by oxidizing carbon in a reverberatory furnace. The puddled iron is then knobbled to improve homogeneity and reduce slag content. After knobbling, the iron is shingled, which means further worked under heavy rolls to compress it into a unified, relatively slag-free ingot. Only then is it reheated and rolled into bar stock, angle iron, or plate.
Success depends on temperature control and judgment. If the metal is too cool, it resists working and the operator tires quickly. If it overheats, the iron becomes brittle. The knobbler must also avoid trapping slag within the mass rather than expelling it. Incomplete knobbling leaves the wrought iron prone to lamination and brittleness along slag stringers, a defect that becomes apparent only during rolling or service.
Modern wrought iron production largely abandoned knobbling in the mid-20th century as electric induction furnaces and continuous casting methods replaced the puddling-shingling sequence. However, the term remains in historical metallurgical texts and in the practice of artisan blacksmiths and heritage ironworkers who still use traditional puddling techniques for specialized applications.
