A ladle is a large, open-topped steel vessel lined with refractory material, designed to hold and transport molten metal at temperatures exceeding 1600 degrees Celsius. In foundries and steel mills, it functions as both a temporary reservoir and the final delivery mechanism for pouring metal into molds or secondary processing equipment. The ladle sits in a tilting frame or crane-suspended cradle, allowing the operator to control flow precisely during the pour.
Steel ladles are classified by capacity and service type. A small hand ladle for casting operations might hold 2 to 5 kilograms; industrial ladles in a steel mill range from 20 to 120 tonnes. The refractory lining, typically magnesia-carbon brick or monolithic castable, withstands both thermal shock and chemical attack from the molten charge. The choice of lining material depends on the metal type and mill practice: basic ladles use magnesia or dolomite for steel; acid ladles use silica for lighter metals. A well-maintained ladle lining lasts 200 to 500 heats before requiring repair or relining.
The ladle itself comprises a steel shell, internal refractory, and a pouring spout or nozzle. Larger ladles include a removable lid to retain heat and prevent oxidation during transport between furnace and mold. Some mills fit ladles with sliding-gate or stopper-rod systems to control metal flow without tilting the entire vessel. Stirring devices and temperature measurement ports may be integrated into high-grade ladles used in secondary steelmaking.
Operational hazards and maintenance
Ladles are prone to thermal cycling damage and refractory spalling if cooled too quickly or overloaded. Moisture trapped in the lining can cause explosive steam release when molten metal contacts it, making ladle drying and preheating critical before use. Erosion occurs fastest near the spout and at the ladle floor where metal dwell time is longest. Regular visual inspection for cracks, bulging, or metal breakthrough is essential to prevent catastrophic failures and molten metal spills.
The term ladle derives from Old English and refers to the spoon-like shape of smaller pouring vessels, a form retained in the industrial scale version. In modern foundry work, the ladle has become the indispensable interface between heat source and mold, making its condition and readiness central to casting quality and mill safety.
