lampwork: glasswork at a torch, not a furnace
Lampwork is a glass-forming technique in which a glassmaker holds a rod or tube of glass directly in the flame of a torch, melting and shaping it without the need for a large furnace. The torch, historically a gravity-fed oil lamp, now usually a tabletop flame powered by propane or natural gas and compressed air, concentrates heat into a small working zone. This allows a single person to make beads, small sculptures, decorative components, and hollow vessels by rotating the glass in the flame while manipulating it with hand tools or by blowing air through a tube.
The glass used in lampwork is typically borosilicate or soda-lime in the form of rods (solid stock) or tubes (for hollow work). The maker heats the glass until it reaches a plastic state, then shapes it by winding, pulling, fusing, or inflating. Because the working temperature is lower than in furnace glasswork and the scale is intimate, lampwork demands precision and manual dexterity rather than the spatial reasoning needed for large-scale casting or blowing.
Temperature and tooling
Lampwork flames typically reach 1000 to 1600 degrees Celsius, sufficient to soften borosilicate glass (which softens around 900 degrees C) but not hot enough for pure silica or lead crystal. Workers use graphite rods, stainless steel mandrels, tungsten picks, and torches fitted with different nozzles to control flame shape and heat. Safety equipment, hand-held shields, didymium or cobalt glasses to filter infrared and sodium D-line glare, and ventilation, is essential, as glass fumes and torch exhaust are hazardous.
The name reflects its historical origin: early glassmakers working at small scale used hand-held lamps fueled by oil or alcohol. That vocabulary persisted even after the technology shifted to compressed-gas torches in the 20th century. Lampwork is sometimes called flame-working, hot-glass, or torch-working by modern practitioners, but the older term remains standard in museums and among collectors, especially for vintage bead and ornament production.
Lampwork occupies a distinct niche between furnace glassblowing (which produces large, thin-walled forms at high temperature) and cold glass work (grinding, cutting, etching). It is the dominant method for making scientific glassware, laboratory tubing, neon sign tubes, decorative beads, and one-off sculptural pieces. Industrial production of lampwork components, such as glass tubing for pharmaceutical vials or laboratory apparatus, runs on specialized machines that automate torch positioning and glass feed, but the manual craft remains a living tradition in art glass studios and small-scale production.
