A left-hander is a track corner or road bend that turns to the left. In racing, rally, and road testing, the term describes the direction of the turn relative to a driver facing forward. The classification matters because suspension setup, brake balance, and tire wear respond differently depending on which way a vehicle is cornering. A left-hander loads the right-side tires while unloading the left-side tires, creating asymmetric stresses across an axle.

The term appears most often in motorsport engineering and test documentation. Engineers will specify performance parameters per corner type: a left-hander at a particular track might demand different damper settings or anti-roll bar stiffness than a right-hander at the same venue. Brake bias tuning also accounts for corner direction, since a driver typically trails less brake into a turn when turning toward their weaker side.

Variations and context

Left-handers can be classified by severity (tight, medium, sweeping) and surface (tarmac, gravel, wet). A hairpin left-hander involves a turn radius tighter than a standard corner, sometimes under 20 meters, forcing near-zero forward speed. Rally drivers and road testers use left-hander and right-hander as shorthand when reporting or logging performance data, tire temperatures, or mechanical issues tied to specific bends.

The phrase is straightforward descriptive language rooted in driver perspective. A passenger would see the same corner but might call it right-ward if viewing from the opposite seat. In technical logs and telemetry, the direction label stays fixed to the road or track, never relative to any observer.
