A lehr is a long, often tunnel-shaped oven that cools glass gradually and uniformly after it leaves the hot end of production. The glass enters at 500 to 600 degrees Celsius and emerges at room temperature, typically over a period of 30 minutes to several hours depending on thickness. Without this controlled cooling, rapid temperature change creates internal stresses that make the glass brittle and prone to spontaneous breakage.

Most modern lehrs use a moving conveyor belt or roller bed to carry the work through a temperature-controlled chamber. The temperature profile is carefully managed: the glass stays hot at the entry end, then the oven progressively cools it, with temperature dropping at a rate suited to the glass composition and article thickness. Some lehrs have multiple zones, each held at a different setpoint. Older lehrs use a fixed bed through which workers slowly push the load by hand.

Why annealing matters in glass

When molten glass cools too fast, the outer surface hardens while the interior remains hot and shrinks further. This differential cooling leaves compressive stress at the surface and tensile stress inside. These locked-in stresses make glass shatter unexpectedly when jarred or when cut. Proper annealing relaxes these stresses by holding the glass just below its softening point for long enough that internal stress can equalize through atomic movement.

Lehrs are essential for hollow glassware such as bottles and jars, pressed glass tableware, and cast optical blanks. Flat glass for windows can sometimes be cooled faster because the thin dimension helps stress relax naturally, but quality production still uses a lehr. The oven itself must be well insulated; poor insulation wastes fuel and makes temperature control difficult.

The name derives from Middle High German and has been used in glassmaking since at least the 14th century. It appears in English trade records from the 1600s. The annealing process itself was empirically understood long before the physics of thermal stress was formalized, but the need to cool glass slowly has always been central to the craft.
