Letter-quality printing refers to output from impact printers, primarily dot-matrix machines equipped with draft-quality or near-letter-quality (NLQ) print heads, that achieves character clarity comparable to or exceeding mechanical typewriters. The technology emerged in the 1970s and 1980s as a way to produce business documents, invoices, and correspondence on computer printers without the visible dot patterns that degraded readability in standard draft mode.

The mechanism relies on a 24-pin print head (compared to 9-pin heads used for draft quality) that strikes the ribbon and paper in a tighter, overlapping dot pattern. Each character is built from multiple passes or a denser grid of dots, typically 360 dots per inch horizontally and 180 vertically, creating the illusion of solid strokes rather than discrete dots. This requires slower printing speeds, usually 40 to 90 characters per second, compared to 150 to 300 cps in draft mode.

The term letter-quality arose directly from business practice: documents intended for external correspondence had to meet the visual standard set by IBM Selectric and other premium typewriters. A letter-quality printer could produce pages suitable for client mail, contracts, and formal records without human post-processing or retyping. Draft-quality output, by contrast, was acceptable only for internal notes and proofs.

Letter-quality printing occupied a middle ground in the printer hierarchy. Daisy-wheel and golf-ball printers produced genuinely solid type but were slow and inflexible. Laser printers, when they arrived in the mid-1980s, offered superior quality but at much higher cost. Dot-matrix NLQ mode provided acceptable output at a price point practical for small businesses and individual offices.

The category declined sharply after 1990 as laser and inkjet printers became affordable and as business communication shifted toward email. The term itself is now archaic in common use, though the technical capability survives in certain industrial label and receipt printers that use impact methods. Understanding letter-quality printing remains relevant for managing legacy equipment and interpreting technical specifications from the 1980s and early 1990s.
