A level junction is a point where two railroad tracks intersect at the same elevation, with neither line elevated or depressed. The crossing occurs on a level plane, creating a diamond or cross pattern when viewed from above. This is the simplest form of rail junction geometrically, though operationally it presents constraints that more complex junction designs avoid.
The crossing itself requires specialized trackwork. Diamond crossings use a casting or welded steel assembly where the rails of one line pass over the rails of the other through a specific geometric arrangement. The critical component is the crossing nose, a pointed section that guides wheel flanges through the intersection. Crossing angles typically range from 30 to 90 degrees; angles sharper than 30 degrees create operational difficulties and increased wear.
Operational Limitations and Trade-offs
Level junctions impose a fundamental constraint: trains cannot occupy both lines simultaneously at the crossing point. This creates conflicts that require signaling interlocks to manage. Where traffic volumes are high or operations must be frequent, grade separation (an overpass or underpass) becomes more efficient despite its capital cost. Many modern rail networks minimize level junctions on main lines precisely because they bottleneck throughput.
Maintenance is another consideration. Diamond crossings experience concentrated wheel impact and require regular inspection for cracking, settling, and gauge drift. The crossing nose wears quickly under heavy traffic. Replacement of a complete diamond assembly is a significant infrastructure undertaking, often requiring track closures.
Level junctions are common at lower-density lines, yard connections, and heritage or preserved railways where traffic frequency is light. In urban transit systems and high-speed rail, grade-separated junctions are standard. The term itself comes directly from the fact that the junction plane remains level, distinguishing it from grade-separated alternatives where one line physically passes above or below the other.
