linecasting: hot-metal typesetting by the line
A linecaster is a keyboard-operated machine that casts complete lines of metal type as single unified slugs, rather than assembling individual letters. The operator types on a keyboard similar to a typewriter; the machine routes brass matrices (character molds) into a line, spaces them with metal wedges, and injects molten type metal, typically an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony heated to around 700 degrees Fahrenheit, into a mold cavity to form a solid slug. The result is a one-piece line of type ready for printing, typically 42 to 66 points wide depending on column width.
The two dominant linecasting machines were the Linotype and the Intertype. Both used rotating magazines to select and position matrices in sequence. A crucial feature of linecasting was the automatic spacing system: the operator typed word spaces as a single keystroke, and the machine inserted expandable metal wedges called spacebands that justified the line to exact width. This allowed rapid composition of newspaper and book text without the tedious hand-spacing required for foundry type.
Speed and the rhythm of the newsroom
Linecasting dominated commercial printing from the 1890s through the mid-20th century because it dramatically increased composition speed. A skilled operator could cast 5,000 to 7,000 ems per hour, roughly equivalent to typing a full newspaper page per session. This made daily newspaper production feasible at scale and lowered the cost of book and magazine printing. The machine's mechanical rhythm became so embedded in print production that the term "linecasting" became synonymous with hot-metal typesetting itself.
Maintenance and metallurgy were central to reliable linecasting. The type metal had to flow freely at the correct temperature; if too cool, the slug cast incompletely; if too hot, the matrices warped or damaged. Slug removal and distribution were manual tasks. Operators had to monitor the paper (feeding the matrices) for damage, watch the metal circulation system, and clear paper jams or metal slugs that failed to eject properly.
Linecasting fell into decline with the adoption of phototypesetting in the 1960s and digital composition in the 1980s. By the early 21st century, working linecasting machines were largely museum pieces or specialist tools for fine letterpress printing. The term itself has become historical, used mostly by print historians, archivists, and practitioners of hand or letterpress printing rather than industrial operators.
