Loam in metalworking is a foundry material, a controlled mixture of silica sand, clay (typically 15 to 30 percent by weight), and often straw or hemp fiber, used to form the body of large casting molds. Unlike pattern-based molding, loam is built up in layers directly against a form or sweep, creating molds for castings that can weigh tons and are too large or geometrically simple to justify the cost of a wooden pattern. The clay acts as a binder; the sand provides the refractory structure; the fiber adds tensile strength and reduces checking as the mold dries.
The composition must be tuned for the specific casting. High-clay loams hold together better but heat more slowly and risk cracking under thermal shock. Lean loams with more sand drain heat faster but require careful ramming to achieve sufficient strength. Some foundries add molasses, salt, or wheat flour to adjust workability and dry strength. The mix is typically rammed or pressed against the sweep (a shaped tool that rotates to define the outer surface) as layers, building the mold wall to the required thickness, usually 4 to 8 inches for large work.
Loam molding demands skill in drying. Green mold (freshly made) has moisture and will generate steam inside the cavity, risking explosive gas pockets if not dried slowly and evenly. Foundries dry loam molds in ovens, sometimes taking days or weeks for large pieces, reaching temperatures of 600 to 800 degrees Fahrenheit. Uneven drying causes warping and dimensional error; fast drying causes checking (surface cracks that allow metal or gas infiltration).
The method is economical only for castings of considerable size and simple or symmetric geometry. A loam mold for a 10-ton bell, a gear blank, or a large valve body can cost a fraction of the pattern and molding labor required for flask work. Once poured and cooled, the loam breaks away and has no reuse value, unlike green-sand molds. Scrap loam is typically returned to sand recovery and clay separation systems.
Loam molding is an older craft, largely superseded in modern jobbing foundries by floor molding with synthetic or chemically bonded sands and by large-scale automated lines. It persists in bell foundries, decorative castings, and shops specializing in heavy machinery components where the mold geometry or size makes other methods impractical. The term "loam" itself derives from soil science, where loam refers to the same general mixture of sand and clay, a distinction foundry workers preserve deliberately.
