Initialism of leading pedestrian interval, a brief period when pedestrians are allowed to start crossing a street before vehicles are allowed to move.

LPI: pedestrians get a head start at the crossing

A leading pedestrian interval (LPI) is a traffic control feature that gives pedestrians a 3 to 10 second head start to enter a crosswalk before the parallel traffic light turns green for vehicles. The pedestrian walk signal activates alone; only after this interval expires does the vehicle green phase begin. This staggered timing creates a buffer zone where pedestrians are already visible and established in the crossing before turning traffic (particularly right turns in jurisdictions that drive on the right) begins to move.

LPIs are implemented at signalized intersections, most commonly on major urban streets where pedestrian volume is high and turning vehicles pose collision risk. They work in tandem with standard walk/don't walk signals; the LPI simply extends the walk phase before vehicles get their turn. The device itself requires no additional hardware beyond the existing signal controller, though programmers must adjust cycle timing to accommodate the extra interval.

Why LPIs matter in injury prevention

Right-turn crashes kill and injure pedestrians regularly, particularly older adults and children who cross more slowly. By the time the LPI ends and vehicles move, pedestrians have progressed 15 to 25 feet into the crossing depending on their walking speed. This distance reduction cuts the time a driver has to react to or collide with a slow-moving pedestrian. Studies from cities that have deployed LPIs at high-risk intersections report reductions in turning-vehicle collisions.

LPIs are especially effective at intersections where right turns on red are permitted, since drivers turning during the pedestrian walk phase become the hazard. The feature does increase cycle length slightly (3 to 8 seconds per cycle), which can affect traffic flow during peak hours. Transit planners weigh this against safety gains, and LPI deployment is becoming standard in complete streets projects and Vision Zero traffic safety initiatives.

The term 'leading' refers to the temporal priority given to pedestrians; they lead the signal sequence. Some jurisdictions also use the term 'pedestrian head start' or refer to the interval duration explicitly when coordinating with adjacent signals. LPI settings are customizable per intersection in modern traffic management software, allowing agencies to adjust the interval based on observed pedestrian pace and intersection geometry.
