A luncart is a roughly spherical or disc-shaped mass of ore, typically ranging from fist-sized to several pounds, found loose or embedded in the surrounding rock or mineral deposit. The term appears in historical mining records, particularly in operations working precious metals and tin, and describes natural clustering or concretion of ore minerals into a compact, discrete form rather than a dispersed vein or fine dissemination through the host rock.

The shape arises from geochemical processes: as ore-bearing fluids percolate through fractures and porous zones, minerals precipitate around a central nucleus or within a confined space, accreting layer by layer until they form a lenticular or near-spherical body. The density and composition of a luncart may differ markedly from the surrounding host rock, sometimes containing high concentrations of the target metal and waste rock in distinct zones or as a relatively homogeneous mass.

Recovery and practical significance

Miners prize luncarts because they can often be extracted whole without destroying the ore through drilling or blasting, preserving internal mineral structure and simplifying hand sorting. In alluvial and placer operations, luncarts become separated and accumulate in stream beds or weathered surface zones, where they appear as discrete nuggets and are recovered by panning, sluicing, or simple hand work. This has made them economically significant in small-scale and artisanal mining.

The term itself is not common in modern technical literature, having largely been displaced by more specific mineralogical language; however, it persists in older mine maps, assay records, and the oral tradition of mining communities in Cornwall, Wales, and other historic mining regions. Understanding the distinction between luncarts and finely disseminated ore remains relevant to reserve estimation and mining geometry in deposits where nodular ore occurs alongside lower-grade material.
