manganesic: old term for manganese-rich alloys

Manganesic is an obsolete adjective used to describe steel, cast iron, or other alloys where manganese is a significant alloying element. The term appears in metallurgical literature from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, though modern practitioners favor the direct designation of manganese content by weight percentage or speak simply of manganese steel. The word derives from the element manganese itself, with the suffix -ic denoting presence or relation.

Steel containing 11 to 14 percent manganese, sometimes called Hadfield steel when properly heat-treated, was historically described as manganesic steel. These alloys are notable for their combination of hardness and work-hardening capacity, making them valuable for mining equipment, railway components, and crushing machinery. The manganese raises the critical cooling rate enough that air cooling produces a martensitic structure, and subsequent mechanical deformation causes further hardening rather than fracture.

The term fell out of favor as the metallurgical trade shifted toward more precise nomenclature. Modern specifications refer to specific manganese ranges, austenitic manganese steel standards, or simply the trade name (Hadfield being the most recognizable). Older patent documents, technical manuals, and engineering reports from the 1890s through 1940s still carry this terminology, making it necessary to recognize when encountered during historical research or when deciphering vintage foundry records.

Beyond high-manganese austenitic grades, the adjective could apply to lower-manganese carbon steels where manganese was deliberately increased to 1.0 to 2.0 percent for strengthening and hardenability. Such steels were common in structural applications and tool manufacture. The shift away from manganesic as a descriptor reflects the metallurgical field's evolution toward standardized composition ranges and mechanical property definitions rather than imprecise element-based naming.
