Manriding is the systematic transport of workers throughout a mine using dedicated equipment, most commonly cage hoists for vertical movement in shafts and rail-mounted personnel carriers for horizontal or inclined travel in tunnels and drifts. In deep hard rock mines, the cage hoist is the dominant manriding system, capable of moving dozens of workers at once from surface to working levels several kilometers below. In coal mines and softer rock operations, manriding trains with specially designed personnel cars serve the same function along tracked routes.

The cage itself is a steel or aluminum box fitted with safety gates, roof plating, and interior handrails. Modern cages typically carry 20 to 60 people depending on shaft configuration and regulatory requirements. The cage is suspended from steel wire rope and guided by guide ropes running in vertical guides on the shaft wall, which keep it centered and prevent swinging. Speed during descent or ascent is usually kept between 10 and 20 meters per second, though deeper shafts may operate faster to reduce shift changeover time.

Manriding trains and other systems

For underground transport along levels, battery-powered or diesel locomotives pull articulated personnel cars with bench seating and adequate headroom. These trains move workers to and from the pit bottom, to different working sections, and back to the shaft collar for exit. Some mines use self-rescue vehicles or man-haul systems (rope-pulled cars) on steeper inclines. In smaller or newer operations, rubber-tired vehicles designed specifically for personnel transport may serve as an alternative to rail-based manriding.

Manriding falls under strict regulatory oversight in most jurisdictions because failure during transport can be catastrophic. Cages must undergo regular testing of load capacity, rope condition, and brake systems. Personnel carriers require certified operators. Speed governors, overwind devices, and redundant braking systems are mandatory. Workers are required to use secure handholds and remain seated during movement, and overcrowding beyond design capacity is not permitted.

The distinction between manriding and materials handling or ore transport is critical: manriding equipment is sized, maintained, and operated to prioritize worker safety rather than throughput. A cage used for manriding cannot be overloaded with equipment or ore to save trips, and manriding routes are kept separate from or subordinate to production haulage wherever possible. Regular inspection schedules, pre-shift checks, and maintenance records are non-negotiable aspects of mine operation.
