A mass haul diagram is a graph that tracks cumulative volumes of excavated soil and rock as you move along the centerline of a linear project, typically a railway, road, or pipeline corridor. The vertical axis shows cumulative volume (in cubic metres or cubic yards); the horizontal axis shows distance along the project route. Each point on the curve represents how much material has been cut from the ground up to that station, minus material already placed as fill. The diagram transforms raw cut-and-fill data into a single continuous curve that reveals where material moves and where it must be sourced or disposed.

The practical value lies in logistics and cost. A rising curve means more excavation is happening than fill is being used; a falling curve means fill consumption exceeds available cut. Horizontal sections mean the project is balanced: all cut material from that section becomes fill immediately downstream. By studying the shape, a site engineer identifies the economical haul distance, decides whether to borrow material from external sources, waste excess at a borrow pit, or accept the cost of long-distance movement. A project that produces a smooth, gently rolling curve is cheaper than one with sharp peaks and valleys, because the latter forces material to travel far or be wasted.

Reading and Using the Diagram

The slope of the curve at any point reflects the net cut or fill rate at that location. A steep climb indicates heavy excavation; a steep drop indicates heavy fill placement. The area between the curve and a reference line (usually a horizontal line drawn through the profile) represents the volume-distance product, measured in cubic metre-kilometres. This product drives haulage cost and is minimized by adjusting the reference line height, which shifts where material moves. Contractors use the diagram to plan truck routes, stockpile locations, and equipment deployment along the job.

The diagram's name comes from the summation method used to build it: at each station, you add the net cut (or subtract the net fill) from the cumulative total of all previous stations. The result is a 'mass' curve because it accumulates mass or volume progressively. The term is standard in civil engineering, especially in railway and highway design, where earthwork often represents 20 to 40 percent of total project cost.

Limitations are real. The diagram assumes material is moved only along the centerline and ignores side slopes, borrow pits, and waste areas. Modern software computes optimal haul paths and volumes automatically, but the mass haul diagram remains a teaching tool and a sanity check. It forces engineers to think spatially about the relationship between cut and fill, and it exposes when a design is unbalanced or wasteful.
