match

A perforated board, block of plaster, hardened sand, etc., in which a pattern is partly embedded when a mould is made, for giving shape to the surfaces of separation between the parts of the mould.

match: the board that holds half a mold together

A match is a rigid backing board or block used in sand casting to support and align one half of a split mold. It sits beneath the pattern and molding sand, providing a flat, stable surface against which the sand is rammed and compressed. The match typically bears the parting line, the plane where the mold separates into cope (upper) and drag (lower) halves. Without it, the sand would slump and the mold cavity would lose its precision.

Matches are made from various materials depending on the casting operation. Hardwood boards, usually pine or maple, are common for small to medium work. For heavier castings, fabricated steel frames or cast iron plates provide the necessary rigidity. Plaster matches are used in certain specialized processes where the pattern must be removed from a stiff mold without undercuts. The match must be flat and free of warping, since any deviation transfers directly to the mold surface.

Function and placement

The match performs two critical functions. First, it acts as a base that prevents sand from collapsing outward during ramming and vibration. Second, it defines the parting surface with precision, ensuring the two mold halves mate cleanly when reassembled. The pattern is partially embedded in sand that rests on the match, with the parting face of the pattern sitting at or just above the match surface. Dowel pins or alignment pins are often driven through the match to register the cope and drag in the correct position.

Matches range in size from small boards perhaps 12 by 18 inches for jewelry casting up to large steel frames several feet across for industrial castings. The thickness varies with casting weight and mold complexity, but typically ranges from half an inch for wood to several inches for fabricated steel. A match must support not only its own weight but also the weight of compressed sand, the pattern, and the stresses of pouring and cooling.

The term "match" originates from the older craftsman's practice of using matched pairs of boards that fit together precisely at their parting face. Although modern practice often uses a single backing board rather than a matched pair, the name persists. Properly maintained matches extend the life of patterns and improve mold accuracy, making them a routine investment in any sand-casting shop that values dimensional consistency.
