A maundril is a hand tool consisting of a wooden handle, typically 90 to 120 centimetres long, fitted with a steel head carrying two diverging prongs or points. The points are separated at the striking end by roughly 5 to 8 centimetres and angled slightly outward. Used in hard rock mining, quarrying, and tunnelling work, the maundril functions as both a striking tool and a lever, allowing a single operator to break and shift rock that would otherwise require chisels or wedges.
The geometry of the two prongs distinguishes the maundril from related tools. A single-pointed pick concentrates force on a narrow line; the maundril spreads impact across two parallel strike points, useful for initiating cracks in competent stone. Once a fracture forms along the line between the prongs, the tool itself can be twisted or rotated to act as a lever, forcing apart loosened fragments. This dual action, striking and prying in one movement, makes it efficient for breaking ore-bearing rock faces where precise drilling is either impossible or uneconomical.
Regional terminology varies. In British mining, the tool is sometimes called a mandrel pick, though this name is ambiguous and can refer to other implements. Continental European usage also recognizes variants where the prongs are of unequal length or angle, adapted to local geology or specific rock types. The overall mass of the head ranges from 2 to 5 kilograms depending on whether the tool is intended for hand work in narrow spaces or for heavier block-breaking operations.
Wear and breakage are predictable. The prongs blunt relatively quickly in abrasive stone such as quartzite or granite, requiring regular resharpening by hammer and anvil. The wooden handle is prone to splitting at the socket where impact shock travels into the shaft; replacement handles are a routine maintenance item. Steel fatigue at the junction of head and shaft can develop after months of repeated striking, leading to sudden failure and ejection of the head.
The maundril occupies a middle ground between handheld tools and mechanised breaking. Where pneumatic or electric picks are impractical, too costly, or simply unnecessary for small-scale extraction, a skilled operator with a maundril can move significant tonnage. It has remained in use in small mines, artisanal operations, and maintenance work in underground settings despite the availability of powered equipment, owing to its simplicity, durability, and independence from power supplies.
