megacandela: a million candelas of light intensity
A megacandela is one million candelas, the SI unit of luminous intensity. It measures the strength of light traveling in a specific direction, weighted for human vision. Where a candela approximates the brightness of a single candle flame, a megacandela describes the output of industrial searchlights, marine navigation beacons, and aircraft landing systems. The symbol is Mcd.
Luminous intensity differs from total light output or illuminance. A 10 megacandela source concentrates its light narrowly; a diffuse 10 megacandela source appears dimmer to the eye because the same intensity is spread over a larger area. This distinction matters in practice: a lighthouse beam rated at several megacandelas delivers that intensity along its optical axis, not uniformly in all directions.
Where megacandela measurements appear
High-intensity discharge lamps, xenon arc lamps, and LED spot arrays are rated in megacandelas when they serve long-range signaling. Aircraft anti-collision lights typically reach 1 to 2 Mcd. Searchlights and military spotlights routinely exceed 10 Mcd. Because the unit scales visibility across standardized test distances, manufacturers and inspectors use megacandela ratings to predict whether a light source will be visible at required range, whether for aviation, maritime, or industrial perimeter applications.
Measuring megacandela output requires photometric equipment: an integrating sphere, goniophotometer, or standardized bench setup with calibrated photodiodes or light meters. The measurement captures intensity in candelas per solid angle, then the peak or axial value is reported. Accuracy depends on lamp age, color temperature, and optical alignment; a xenon lamp loses brightness with burn hours, so megacandela ratings include test conditions and lamp hours.
The mega prefix follows SI convention, stacking neatly alongside kilocandela (Kcd) for lower-intensity applications and candela itself for household and office lighting. This scaling makes specification clearer than writing luminous intensity in raw candelas for powerful sources.
