MHL: micro-USB to HDMI bridge for mobile displays
MHL is a physical and electrical standard that allows a mobile device with a micro-USB port to output video and audio to an external display via HDMI. The standard appeared around 2010 as a way to connect smartphones and tablets to monitors and televisions without requiring a separate display connector on the device itself. A typical MHL cable has a micro-USB connector on one end and full-size HDMI on the other, though adapters are also common. The specification was maintained by a consortium including Sony, Samsung, and Toshiba until adoption slowed in the mid-2010s.
MHL carries both digital video data and power delivery over a single cable. A device supporting MHL can transmit video resolutions up to 1080p (or 4K in later versions like MHL 3.0), along with stereo or surround audio, while simultaneously receiving charging current from the external display or power supply. This dual function was valuable in mobile contexts where battery drain during extended screen mirroring was a real constraint. The standard defines precise voltage and signaling protocols to negotiate what the connected display can handle and to manage the power handshake without damaging either device.
The decline of MHL reflects industry shifts rather than technical failure. As USB Type-C connectors became standard on mobile devices from around 2015 onward, manufacturers favored USB-C video output standards like DisplayPort Alt Mode and Thunderbolt 3, which offered better bandwidth and more flexible pin allocation. MHL support was concentrated in certain Samsung and LG devices and never achieved universal adoption. By 2020, very few new devices shipped with MHL capability. The old micro-USB form factor, on which MHL depended, has largely disappeared from flagship phones.
For technicians and installers, the practical issues with MHL are compatibility verification and cable quality. Not every micro-USB device supports MHL, even if it looks like it should. Genuine MHL cables are required; cheap knockoffs may carry power but fail to negotiate video properly, leaving users with audio or no signal at all. Display equipment should be checked for MHL input certification before assuming it will work with a mobile device. Some modern displays have dropped MHL entirely in favor of cheaper HDMI-only or USB-C inputs.
MHL still appears in industrial and commercial settings where older mobile equipment connects to fixed displays: digital signage, point-of-sale terminals, or medical devices. Servicers need to stock compatible cables and understand that MHL bandwidth limitations (maximum around 8 Gbps in version 2.0) make it unsuitable for high-refresh gaming or professional video work. For new installations, USB-C or wireless casting solutions are now the norm.
