A milliarcsecond (mas) is a unit of angular measurement equal to 0.001 arcseconds, or roughly 4.85 microradians. To set it in context: one arcsecond is 1/3600th of a degree, so a milliarcsecond is 1/3,600,000th of a degree. In practical terms, this is the angle subtended by a 1 centimetre object at a distance of about 2 kilometres. The unit appears throughout high-precision fields where angles must be specified at the limit of optical and mechanical resolution.
Astronomers use the milliarcsecond routinely to express the apparent positions of stars, the diameters of distant objects, and the subtle shifts caused by parallax as Earth orbits the sun. Ground-based telescopes equipped with adaptive optics can now resolve details down to tens of milliarcseconds; space-based instruments like the Gaia satellite measure stellar positions to a few milliarcseconds. In radio astronomy, interferometric arrays can achieve resolutions of a few milliarcseconds across a broad spectrum.
Application beyond astronomy
In laboratory metrology and precision engineering, the milliarcsecond emerges when calibrating optical benches, laser systems, and coordinate measuring machines. Angular encoders and rotary tables may be specified to accuracies of a few hundred milliarcseconds. Theodolites and autocollimators used for straightness and flatness inspection often work in this range. When aligning collimators, mirrors, or lens elements to tight tolerances, technicians express permissible angular error in milliarcseconds.
The name follows the standard metric prefix convention: milli- denotes one-thousandth, and arcsecond (or arc-second) derives from the division of a degree into 60 arcminutes, each divided into 60 arcseconds. The term arcsecond itself marks the historical link between angle measurement and time: ancient astronomers divided the circle into 360 degrees because the sun appears to move roughly 1 degree per day, and both degrees and hours were subdivided sexagesimally.
Confusion sometimes arises between milliarcseconds and milliradian (mrad), which is an entirely different unit: 1 milliarcsecond is approximately 0.00485 milliradians. When specifying or reading tolerances in optical and mechanical drawings, verifying which unit is intended is essential, as the difference can shift acceptance limits by orders of magnitude.
