A miter square is a handheld marking and checking tool with a fixed blade set at 45 degrees to its stock. The blade is typically a steel ruler 8 to 10 inches long, mortised into a wooden or plastic handle so the angle cannot be adjusted. Unlike a sliding bevel, which locks any angle you set, a miter square does one job: it confirms or marks the 45-degree angle used in miter joints, chamfers, and angled cuts.

The tool consists of a thick stock (the handle) and a thin blade. The stock sits flat on your workpiece while the blade extends at 45 degrees, creating a reliable line to cut or chisel to. Because the angle is fixed and built into the tool's geometry, there is no mechanism to wear out or slip; accuracy depends only on the tool's initial manufacture and whether the blade remains square to the stock. Most miter squares weigh between 4 and 8 ounces and fit easily in a tool pouch.

Typical use and variants

Woodworkers use miter squares to mark miter cuts on picture frames, furniture edges, and trim. The blade can be laid along the grain as a guide for a hand saw, or the angle can be marked with a pencil and then cut freehand or on a powered miter saw. Metalworkers employ them for the same purpose: marking 45-degree bevels on sheet metal or structural angles before cutting or filing. Some miter squares include a small spirit level or a scribed center line on the blade for additional functions. Heavy-duty versions with thicker blades exist for industrial layout work.

The name reflects its primary application: checking and marking miter joints, where two pieces meet at a 45-degree angle so the grain or edge appears to flow continuously across the joint. The square part of the name comes from the general category of angle-checking tools; despite the name, a miter square is not truly a square in the sense of a 90-degree tool, but the term has held in the trade for over a century.

Common mistakes include relying on a miter square to check angles other than 45 degrees (it cannot) and confusing it with a sliding bevel or a combination square, both of which adjust to any angle. A miter square also differs from a speed square, which is triangular and marked with multiple angles and scales. If you need flexibility, you need a bevel; if you need speed and certainty for 45-degree work, a miter square's fixed angle is an asset, not a limitation.
