A montant is a vertical member in timber framing, carpentry, and joinery. It carries load and resists lateral stress in window frames, door frames, partition walls, and structural assemblies. The term originates from French, meaning "that which stands up." In English-speaking trades, you will also hear it called a stile, post, or upright, though these terms sometimes carry specific meanings depending on context and geography.

The montant's core function is to span vertically between two horizontal members, typically rails or plates. In a five-piece window frame, the two vertical montants sit between the top and bottom rails. In a door frame, they span from the head to the threshold or floor. The vertical grain of the wood runs parallel to the load path, making this orientation efficient. Montants must resist bending from wind pressure, the weight of infill panels or glazing, and any concentrated loads applied to the frame.

Common variants and sizing

A muntin is a smaller montant that divides a window or door pane into smaller lights; a glazing bar in a six-pane window is a muntin. A stile in a door or paneled frame is typically a heavier montant at the outer edges, while interior vertical divisions are often called muntins. In structural timber framing, a post or king post is a much larger montant carrying roof or floor loads down to the foundation. Softwoods like pine and spruce are standard; hardwoods like oak appear in high-end joinery. Cross-sectional dimensions range from 1.25 inches by 2.5 inches for window muntins to 4 inches by 6 inches or larger for structural posts.

Failure modes include checking (radial splitting along the grain caused by uneven drying), cupping (edge warping from moisture gradient), and crushing at bearing points where the montant sits in a mortise or on a plate. Seasonality matters: wood shrinks more in the radial direction than along the grain. A montant installed green or at high moisture content will shrink, creating gaps at joints and compromising weather sealing in windows and doors. Modern production often calls for kiln-dried stock at 12 percent moisture content or lower in heated climates.

In modern fenestration, aluminum and vinyl montants have replaced wood in many applications, but timber montants remain standard in heritage carpentry, bespoke joinery, and timber frame construction. Understanding the montant's role in load transfer and weather performance is essential for anyone designing or repairing traditional frames, diagnosing frame distortion, or specifying replacement components.
