MS: a merchant vessel powered by diesel engines
An MS, or motor ship, is a cargo or passenger vessel propelled by internal combustion engines rather than steam turbines or sails. The term distinguishes these ships from older steam-powered vessels (SS) and sail-driven ships. Most modern merchant vessels are motor ships, using medium-speed or slow-speed diesel engines that drive a single or multiple propellers. The engines consume heavy fuel oil or marine gas oil, depending on the vessel class and regulatory requirements.
Motor ships range enormously in size and purpose. A general cargo MS might measure 150 to 200 meters in length with a capacity of 10,000 to 20,000 deadweight tons (dwt). Container ships operate at much larger scales, with some exceeding 400 meters and carrying over 20,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). Bulk carriers, tankers, and refrigerated cargo vessels (reefer ships) are also classed as motor ships. The type of cargo, trading route, and fuel consumption efficiency drive the choice of engine size and propeller configuration.
The diesel engines in an MS typically operate at lower speeds than automotive engines, often turning at 60 to 200 revolutions per minute (rpm) depending on the engine type. Slow-speed engines drive large-diameter propellers directly without a gearbox, while medium-speed engines require a reduction gearbox. Fuel consumption, thermal efficiency, and maintenance cycles differ significantly between these configurations. Modern MS vessels increasingly incorporate technologies such as scrubber systems to meet sulphur oxide emission limits, variable geometry turbochargers, and electronically controlled fuel injection.
Practical considerations on deck and in the engine room
An MS requires a smaller crew than an equivalently sized steam ship, since diesel engines need less auxiliary equipment and fewer personnel for routine operation and maintenance. However, the complexity of modern electronic and hydraulic systems means that engine-room staff must be trained in different skills than their steam-era predecessors. Propeller shaft alignment, bearing temperature, and fuel treatment systems demand regular attention. Unlike some older ships, an MS can reach operational speed and reverse thrust within minutes rather than hours.
The term MS appears in ship classification societies' records, port documentation, and maritime insurance instruments. It is often written M/S or written out in full as "motor ship" on official papers. The abbreviation helps distinguish propulsion type at a glance, which is essential when assessing a vessel's age, operating costs, environmental compliance, and suitability for specific trade routes. Modern regulations affecting emissions, fuel quality, and ballast water management all pivot on the engine type and fuel consumption profile of a registered motor ship.
