In hosiery and knitwear manufacture, narrowing means decreasing the number of active stitches on a knitting machine by combining two loops into one. The operator or automated system takes stitches from adjacent needles and feeds them as a single stitch onto the next needle, effectively reducing fabric width or diameter at that point in the knit structure.

Narrowing serves practical purposes in shaping garments. A sock leg narrows at the ankle, a sweater sleeve tapers toward the cuff, and the crown of a cap narrows progressively until closure. On a circular knitting machine, narrowing is performed across a needle bed during each revolution, allowing precise control over how quickly the diameter decreases. The rate of narrowing, measured in stitches per course or per round, determines the slope of the taper and affects how the finished garment drapes and fits.

Methods and consequences

Narrowing can be done manually by a skilled operator selecting which needles to operate, or programmed into an automated cam-driven or electronic machine. The two stitches being combined must be of compatible tension and loop length; if one stitch is significantly tighter than the other, the join becomes visible as a fault line in the knit face. Improper narrowing creates distorted edges and uneven taper, particularly problematic in fashion hosiery where leg lines must be straight.

The term appears in hosiery vocabulary because sock and stocking production drove early machine specialization. Circular machines for this work performed narrowing as a routine shaping operation, and the vocabulary stuck even as the technique spread to flat-bed machines making sweaters and other garments. In modern production, narrowing algorithms must account for yarn type, stitch density, and the distance over which the taper occurs to maintain consistent appearance.
