Navigation. Often used attributively, as in nav beacon.

nav: the kit and practice that gets vehicles where they need to go

Nav is the operational shorthand for navigation, the process and equipment used to determine position, direction, and course. In transport and logistics, it refers both to the systems themselves (GPS receivers, radar, charts, beacons) and to the act of plotting and steering a route. The term compresses what would otherwise be a clunky phrase, so you hear it constantly: nav system, nav data, nav error, nav beacon.

Marine and aviation operations distinguish between different nav modes depending on what is available and what the job demands. Celestial navigation uses stars and sun sights; electronic nav relies on radio beacons, GPS, or inertial systems; visual nav means identifying landmarks and using charts. A ship or aircraft under way often uses layered nav, switching between methods or cross-checking them. Loss of primary nav systems is a serious incident because position uncertainty cascades into fuel miscalculation, missed waypoints, and collision risk.

Nav Infrastructure and Signals

Ashore and afloat, nav depends on infrastructure: lighthouse beacons, radio transmitters, GPS satellites, and radar reflectors. A nav beacon is a fixed or floating marker (buoy, light tower, radio transmitter) that broadcasts its position or characteristics so that moving vessels can use it as a reference point. These beacons are catalogued in nav charts and nav publications. For aircraft, nav aids include VOR stations (very high frequency omnidirectional range), NDB beacons, and instrument landing systems.

GPS has simplified much of nav work over the past three decades, but it is not foolproof. Signals are jammed in some regions, blocked in urban canyons or under dense tree cover, and subject to atmospheric distortion. Logistics companies therefore still maintain backup nav procedures: paper charts, radio direction finding, or inertial navigation (which does not rely on external signals but accumulates drift over time). A nav fix is a confirmed position, ideally from multiple independent sources.

Nav error, nav drift, nav uncertainty: these are the hazards that keep dispatchers and operators alert. In containerized freight and bulk shipping, nav mistakes can add days to transit time or worse. In aviation, nav errors are tracked relentlessly because they lead to altitude deviations or runway misalignment. The nav officer or watch keeper is responsible for continuous position monitoring and chart work, a role that remains partly manual even in highly automated vessels and aircraft.
