Nitrous oxide injection is a forced induction system that sprays liquid N2O directly into an engine's intake manifold or combustion chamber. When nitrous oxide heats up, it breaks down and releases oxygen, allowing the fuel charge to burn hotter and faster. A typical system stores the gas at around 900 PSI in a stainless steel bottle mounted in the vehicle, with solenoid valves, regulators, and jets controlling exactly how much flows into the engine on demand.
The appeal is straightforward: more oxygen means more fuel can burn in each cycle, and more fuel burn means more power. A modest nitrous kit might add 50 to 100 horsepower; aggressive setups on drag racing engines can add 300 or more. Because the effect is immediate and controllable, nitrous lets drivers activate extra power only when needed, unlike a turbo or supercharger that runs constantly. The driver activates it with a switch, usually on the throttle or steering column.
The catch is stress. The sudden combustion spike hits pistons, rods, and crank bearings with brutal force. Cheap fuel, poor tuning, a lean air-fuel ratio, or carbon buildup can cause detonation, which grenades the engine from the inside in seconds. Nitrous kits demand precision: correct jetting, a clean fuel system, adequate fuel pressure, a strong ignition system, and well-timed spark plugs that can handle the heat. Many small-displacement or stock engines simply cannot survive it without internal upgrades.
Why it works, and why it fails
Nitrous oxide is colorless, odorless, and nonflammable on its own, so it does not add fuel. It only provides oxygen for combustion. However, because the engine suddenly has more oxygen available, more fuel can be injected safely, and the resulting burn releases much more energy. The technique has been used in racing since the 1970s and remains popular in drag racing, where 100-yard acceleration is the only metric that matters.
Street cars and weekend warriors use smaller, milder systems, often called foggers or progressive kits, which activate gradually or in stages to reduce shock. Serious competitors use direct-port injection, where nitrous is sprayed into each individual cylinder's runner, giving finer control and response. Dry kits inject only nitrous and rely on the fuel system already in place; wet kits add a separate fuel nozzle to match the nitrous flow. The terminology varies, and the culture around nitrous is deeply rooted in drag racing slang, where hitting the button or spraying it means activating the system.
