Nixie tube
An obsolete electronic device for displaying numerals or other information by means of glow discharge.

A Nixie tube is a vacuum tube filled with a mixture of neon and argon gas at low pressure, used to display decimal numerals or alphanumeric characters through gas ionization. Inside the glass envelope sit ten stacked wire cathodes shaped as digits 0 through 9, plus an anode grid. When high voltage (typically 170 to 180 volts DC) is applied across the appropriate cathode and the common anode, the gas ionizes and glows orange-red around the selected digit shape, making it visible through the glass.
The tube derives its name from the Burroughs Nixie models of the 1950s, though the technology was developed by Telefunken in Germany. Common variants include the IN-14 (Soviet production, used widely in the 1970s and 1980s), the ZM1000 series (Eastern European), and various Japanese types. Single-digit and multi-digit tubes exist; some tubes include a decimal point cathode for use in digital instruments. Tube sizes vary from about 35 mm in height for compact industrial types to over 70 mm for premium laboratory displays.
Nixie tubes require higher voltages and driver circuits than modern LEDs or LCD displays, making them expensive to operate and impossible to integrate into portable battery-powered equipment. They also suffer from cathodic sputtering, a gradual dimming over thousands of hours as metal erodes from the cathodes and deposits on the anode. Despite these limitations, they dominated industrial instrumentation, laboratory equipment, test gear, and some consumer electronics until the 1980s.
The visible glow is plasma, not incandescence. Each digit draws roughly 1 to 4 milliamps depending on the tube type and driving voltage. Nixie tubes require no warm-up time and do not fade with age in the way that filament-based displays do, though the aforementioned sputtering means typical operational life is 5,000 to 20,000 hours. Multiplexing multiple tubes on a single high-voltage supply line was common practice in frequency counters, multimeters, and industrial process displays.
Today Nixie tubes are obsolete in new equipment but remain valued by vintage electronics restorers and hobbyists. New-old-stock tubes are still available from Eastern European warehouses, though prices have risen sharply as supplies dwindle. Modern hobbyists sometimes build small Nixie clocks or display panels using microcontroller drivers and high-voltage switching circuits, treating them more as a retro aesthetic choice than a practical alternative to digital displays.
