An octode is a vacuum tube containing eight active electrodes, developed in the 1930s and 1940s primarily for use in radio receivers. The eight elements typically include a cathode, anode, and six control grids or similar structures, arranged coaxially within the glass or metal envelope. This design allowed a single tube to perform multiple functions that would otherwise require separate valves, making receiver circuits more compact and economical.

The octode was engineered to combine oscillator and mixer functions in one envelope. In a superheterodyne radio receiver, the incoming signal must be converted to an intermediate frequency for amplification and filtering. The octode's design allowed the local oscillator signal and incoming RF signal to be mixed efficiently without requiring separate tubes for each stage. This was particularly valuable in portable and domestic radio sets where space and cost were critical constraints.

Common octodes included types such as the ECH35 and ECH81, which used mains or battery supply depending on the application. The tube required careful biasing and frequency compensation, as the interaction between the oscillator section and mixer section could cause instability if poorly adjusted. Microphony and noise characteristics made octodes less suitable than separate tubes for high-fidelity applications, limiting their use mainly to AM and FM broadcast receivers.

The octode became obsolete in the 1960s and 1970s as germanium and silicon transistors displaced vacuum tubes entirely. Modern radio designs use integrated circuits that perform mixing, oscillation, and amplification as semiconductor functions. The term octode now appears chiefly in literature on vintage radio restoration and valve amplifier design.
