In energy and utilities, output is the measurable quantity of electrical power, thermal energy, water, or gas that a facility produces and supplies to the grid or end users during a specified period. For a coal plant, natural gas turbine, or wind farm, output is typically measured in megawatts (MW) of instantaneous capacity or megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy delivered over an hour, day, or year. The distinction matters: a 100 MW plant running at half load for one hour produces 50 MWh of output.
Output varies by facility type and fuel source. A baseload coal or nuclear plant operates continuously and declares a rated output in MW; a solar farm's output swings with weather and time of day; a hydroelectric dam's output depends on water availability and spillway decisions. Utilities dispatch generation to match demand, so actual output rarely equals nameplate capacity. A wind turbine rated at 3 MW might produce 1 MW on a calm afternoon and 2.8 MW during a strong gust.
Measurement and monitoring
Output is tracked at the meter: revenue metering measures what leaves the plant to the grid, while auxiliary metering tracks internal consumption. Operators report gross output (total generation) and net output (generation minus on-site consumption). A thermal plant burning fuel to spin a generator may consume 8 to 12 percent of its own output just to run cooling systems, compressors, and control equipment. Transmission losses further reduce what reaches the customer.
Degradation in output signals equipment trouble. A boiler fouled with scale reduces steam quality; a turbine with blade erosion loses efficiency; a transformer with core heating loses voltage regulation. Utilities analyze output trends against weather, fuel quality, and maintenance records to predict component failures before they force outages.
Output is the primary commercial metric in energy trading. Wholesale power prices are quoted per MWh; ancillary service payments reward plants for output stability, ramp rate, and frequency support. Regulatory agencies require generators to declare available output capacity for resource planning; underreporting triggers penalties, overreporting strands costs on operators when they cannot deliver. Output forecasting drives reserve margin calculations, fuel procurement, and carbon emissions accounting.
