Overhand work occurs when a mason must joint or point the visible face of a wall from the side opposite to where that face sits. Instead of standing in front of the wall they intend to finish, the mason works from behind it, leaning across or over the top to reach the joints. This is the reverse of the normal, comfortable position and introduces real physical strain and reduced precision.
The condition arises most often during the construction of cavity walls or when an internal scaffold cannot be positioned on the finished face side. A two-leaf wall may be built with the outer wythe (the visible brick or stone) facing outward, but access during construction exists only from the inner scaffold. The mason must reach across the cavity to joint that outer face, or reach over the wall edge if working from above. Pointing (raking out and filling joints after the wall has set) can also fall to overhand work if site conditions prevent proper access.
Work quality suffers under overhand conditions. The mason's vision is compromised, gravity works against tool control, and fatigue sets in quickly. Joint consistency, weather resistance, and aesthetic finish all decline. The joints are harder to pack fully and harder to finish to a clean profile. Repointing overhand joints by hand is slower and more costly than work from the proper side, which is why specifications sometimes demand it be avoided or restricted to unavoidable circumstances.
The term reflects the literal action: the mason's hand and arm must reach overhead or across the wall body to complete the work. It is the opposite of underhand work, where the mason stands above a horizontal joint and works downward into it. Overhand appears in masonry standards and contractual documents because it carries cost and schedule implications and because it is sometimes explicitly prohibited on quality-sensitive work.
