A passive restraint is a safety device that deploys automatically during a crash without requiring the occupant to do anything. Unlike active restraints such as seat belts that you must fasten manually, passive systems like airbags and pre-tensioning mechanisms activate on their own when sensors detect rapid deceleration or impact, cushioning the occupant and reducing injury severity.

Airbags are the most common passive restraint found in modern vehicles. A frontal airbag typically deploys within 25 to 50 milliseconds of a serious frontal collision, inflating to full volume (around 60 liters for a driver-side unit) using a chemical propellant or compressed gas. Side-impact and curtain airbags protect the torso and head during lateral crashes. Some systems use multiple stages, firing with different force levels depending on crash severity detected by accelerometers and pressure sensors.

Passive restraints work best in combination with active ones. A seat belt alone cannot fully prevent head and chest injury in high-speed collisions; airbags absorb energy by allowing controlled deflation as the occupant's body presses into the bag. Conversely, airbags cannot restrain limbs or prevent ejection. This complementary relationship is why modern vehicles are required to have both systems functioning.

Common failure points and maintenance

Airbag systems fail silently in several ways. Sensor corrosion, wiring faults, and ECU software errors can prevent deployment when needed. Many failures go undetected until the dashboard warning light illuminates, which happens only if the system's self-diagnostic catch a major fault. Replacement airbag modules are expensive, and aftermarket or salvaged units are sometimes installed without proper calibration to the vehicle's weight and sensor configuration, compromising reliability.

The term passive distinguishes these systems from the driver's own active choices: fastening a belt, adjusting seating position, or braking. In regulatory language, passive restraints meet federal standards such as FMVSS 208 in the United States, which specify deployment timing, inflation pressure, and occupant protection criteria across different test conditions and dummy sizes.
