A path is a specific time window and route segment reserved for a single train to operate between two points on a railway network. It represents the physical and temporal space allocated to that train, bounded by the movements of trains ahead and behind it. Without paths, trains would collide; the path system is how rail operators manage capacity and prevent conflicts on shared infrastructure.

Paths are defined by a combination of factors: the route itself (which line or lines the train will use), the direction of travel, the time window (departure time and expected arrival time at the destination), and operational constraints like speed, stopping patterns, and priority. A single path might span 50 kilometres or 500 kilometres depending on the operational geography. Path allocation is typically handled by an independent infrastructure manager, who divvies up available capacity among train operators according to published rules.

Capacity, conflict, and allocation

The number of paths available on any given route is finite. It depends on track layout, signalling systems, station dwell times, and safety headways (the minimum time gap between successive trains). A single track might accommodate 12 paths per day in one direction; a quadruple-track line might support 60 or more. When demand exceeds supply, paths become a contested resource, particularly at peak times and on trunk routes.

Path conflicts arise when requested paths overlap or when one operator's desired schedule clashes with another's. Resolution involves negotiation, priority rules (passenger services often rank higher than freight), and sometimes rejection of the request. Peak-hour congestion at major junctions can make path-finding a complex combinatorial problem; larger operators maintain dedicated scheduling teams to secure premium paths.

The term 'path' is used across European rail systems and beyond, though some older or fully vertically integrated networks use different language. In North America, where rail is predominantly freight-focused and operators often own their own tracks, the concept exists but is less formalised. The path framework has become more important as network congestion has increased and as regulatory separation between infrastructure and operations has widened.
