A fine, closely woven fabric, made from cotton, polyester or a mix of these, and used for sheets and clothing.

Percale: tightly woven cotton that gets softer with washing

Percale is a plain-weave cotton fabric constructed with a thread count of at least 180 threads per inch (TPI), though quality percale typically runs 200 to 400 TPI. The defining feature is the tight, balanced weave: warp and weft threads interlace in a one-over-one pattern with minimal gap between them, producing a smooth, crisp hand feel and a matte finish. The fabric is durable, breathable, and holds up well to repeated washing and institutional laundry cycles.

The name comes from the Persian word pargalah, routed through French and Italian trade routes. Modern percale mixes pure cotton with polyester blends, typically 50/50 or 65/35 cotton-polyester, which improves wrinkle resistance and drying time at the cost of some breathability. Pure cotton percale wrinkles more readily but offers superior moisture absorption and comfort for sleepwear.

In textile mills, percale is woven on conventional looms at relatively slow speeds compared to looser weaves, because the tight construction demands precision and tension control. The yarn must be fine enough to pack tightly without creating slubs or weaving faults. After weaving, the cloth undergoes singeing to burn off surface fuzz, then mercerization to enhance luster and dye uptake, especially in cotton-rich formulations.

Performance characteristics and failures

Percale's crisp feel softens after several wash cycles as water and mechanical action relax the fibers slightly. This is normal and expected; buyers often notice a pleasant softening by the tenth wash. Poor-quality percale may exhibit pilling if the cotton staple is short or weakly twisted, or may develop thin spots if weft density is uneven. Seam puckering can occur if tension settings during sewing are too tight for the rigid weave.

The fabric is favored in hospitality because it withstands commercial laundry temperatures of 140 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit and repeated extraction cycles without rapid fiber degradation. Weight is typically 110 to 130 grams per square meter for sheeting. Percale competes directly with sateen (a satin weave) in the premium bed linen market; sateen is smoother and more lustrous but wrinkles more easily and offers slightly less durability under heavy use.
