photolettering: type set by light, not lead
Photolettering is a photographic process for composing text by projecting light through letter forms onto film or photographic paper. Instead of arranging cast metal type in a chase, the operator uses a machine that shines light through glass or film masters of individual characters, exposing them in sequence onto a light-sensitive medium. The exposed film is then developed chemically to produce a negative or positive image ready for platemaking or reproduction. This method dominated commercial printing from the 1950s through the 1980s, offering speed and flexibility that hand composition could not match.
The core equipment varies by sophistication and application. A basic photolettering unit consists of a light source, a character wheel or strip containing photographic masters of the alphabet in a chosen typeface, an aperture to isolate individual characters, and a motorized stage to advance the film frame by frame. More advanced machines like the Photon and Linofilm could kern letters automatically, adjust size within limits by moving the character master closer or farther from the paper, and expose multiple columns. Some systems used spinning discs carrying hundreds of typefaces; operators could change fonts instantly by rotating to a new wheel.
Workflow and practical limits
The workflow required typing or keyboarding text into the machine to control exposure sequence, then running the film through a developer. Type size was set photographically: enlarging or reducing the projected character image changed the final size, typically from 6 to 72 points or beyond, depending on the machine. Spacing and leading (line spacing) were controlled mechanically or, in later electronic systems, by punch tape or computer input. The result was paste-up ready: film positives or negatives could be cropped, pasted into mechanicals, and photographed to make printing plates. Unlike metal type, photolettering required no physical storage and allowed typeface changes without buying new fonts.The process had real constraints that shaped its use. Kerning was coarse compared to hand composition; many machines used fixed spacing. Fine details in very small type could blur or fill in under magnification. Corrections meant re-exposing and pasting up fresh galleys. Film degradation during storage could affect reprints years later. Despite these limits, photolettering's speed, a few seconds to expose a line of type versus minutes to hand-set lead, made it indispensable for newspapers, advertising agencies, and magazine publishers managing tight deadlines.
The technology was effectively obsolete by the mid-1990s, displaced by digital typesetting and desktop publishing. PostScript and TrueType fonts rendered the need for physical type masters unnecessary. Printers no longer needed dedicated photolettering operators or the machines themselves. However, understanding the workflow and terminology remains important for anyone working with historical printing archives, restoring offset printing equipment, or interpreting the production methods behind printed materials from the 1960s to 1980s. The aesthetic character of photolettered type, its particular quirks and imperfections, also shows up in some modern design work as a deliberate stylistic reference.
