picosiemens: one trillionth of a siemens

A picosiemens (pS) is a unit of electrical conductance, the reciprocal of resistance, equal to 10-12 siemens. It measures how readily a material or component allows electrical current to flow. In practical terms, picosiemens readings appear when measuring extremely small currents or the leakage paths through insulators, coatings, and circuit traces that should block current entirely.

Picosiemens measurements are critical in metrology for validating the insulation quality of high-voltage equipment, printed circuit boards, and protective coatings. A typical insulation resistance meter will report results in megohms (MΩ) or gigohms (GΩ), but the underlying conductance in picosiemens helps technicians spot degradation trends. For instance, a coating that measures 100 GΩ represents a conductance of 10 pS, and a shift toward 50 GΩ signals a doubling of conductance that may indicate moisture ingress or contamination.

The picosiemens scale becomes necessary because modern electronics operate at such tight tolerances that even microscopic leakage matters. Surface-insulation resistance (SIR) tests on circuit boards, moisture-barrier film validation, and high-voltage cable jacket assessment all work in this range. Environmental conditions like humidity and temperature shift conductance measurably, so dimensional control and material traceability during manufacturing demand picosiemens-level sensitivity to catch problems before assembly.

The unit name follows the International System of Units (SI). Siemens is the conductance unit (reciprocal of the ohm); the prefix pico- denotes 10-12. This nested terminology can confuse operators unfamiliar with SI prefixes, but it avoids awkward decimal notation when working with trace-level leakage currents in the femtoampere range across test voltages of hundreds of volts.
