A pilot vehicle is a standard road vehicle, typically a van or truck with high visibility markings, that precedes or follows an abnormally large or heavy vehicle to warn approaching traffic and guide the movement through public roads. Its primary function is to alert drivers and pedestrians to the presence of an oversized load before they encounter it, reducing collision risk and managing traffic flow around an obstruction that cannot fit within normal lane widths or height clearances.

Pilot vehicles are required when a load exceeds the dimensional or weight limits set by road authorities. In most jurisdictions, this means vehicles wider than 2.6 meters, taller than 4.3 meters, longer than 18.75 meters, or exceeding legal axle weight limits. The pilot vehicle is equipped with flashing amber or red lights, wide-angle warning beacons, and signage that reads "WIDE LOAD" or "ABNORMAL LOAD," sometimes with directional arrows. Some jurisdictions require two pilot vehicles, one ahead and one behind, particularly for the widest loads or in congested areas.

The lead pilot vehicle performs advance reconnaissance, checking for overhead hazards such as power lines, low bridges, and overhanging vegetation, and verifying that the planned route accommodates the load width and turning radius. It communicates with the heavy vehicle driver via radio, alerting them to obstacles, narrow sections, or traffic conflicts ahead. The trailing pilot vehicle, where required, manages traffic behind the convoy and prevents other vehicles from attempting unsafe passing maneuvers.

Pilot vehicle operators must hold a valid driving license and specific training certification in load escorting. In many regions, they undergo formal instruction in communication protocols, road law, hazard recognition, and the behavior characteristics of oversized loads during turns and braking. The job demands constant situational awareness: operators must anticipate traffic patterns, identify pinch points weeks before the move, and understand the load's dimensions and weight distribution to judge clearances accurately.

Failures in pilot vehicle work typically stem from inadequate route survey, misjudgment of bridge or underpass clearance, loss of radio communication between pilot and driver, or the pilot vehicle being separated from the main load during stops or lane changes. These incidents can result in damaged infrastructure, power outages, traffic gridlock, and in severe cases, collisions. The cost of hiring a pilot vehicle, often 150 to 300 euros per vehicle per day, is a standard business expense in heavy transport, far cheaper than the cost of damage or delay caused by an unescorted movement.
