pitwork: the pumps that keep mines from drowning
Pitwork is the collective term for the pumping apparatus installed in a mine shaft to remove water that accumulates in the working levels below. Water ingress is relentless in most underground operations, entering through natural seepage, geological fissures, and leakage around shaft linings. Without active drainage, pits would flood and become unworkable within hours or days depending on the influx rate. Pitwork systems are therefore as essential to mine operation as the hoists that move ore and personnel.
Traditional pitwork consisted of steam-driven or later diesel-powered reciprocating pumps positioned at intermediate depths, often at the lowest accessible working level or sump. Water was drawn down through suction pipes and expelled up the shaft via discharge lines. The machinery was typically housed in a purpose-built chamber or pump house to protect it from water spray and to allow maintenance access. Modern installations increasingly use submersible electric pumps lowered into the sump itself, which reduces space requirements and piping complexity but requires reliable electrical supply down the shaft.
The capacity and arrangement of pitwork depends on the mine's geology and expected water yield. A shallow coal pit with modest seepage might operate a single pump of 50 to 100 gallons per minute. Deeper mines or those in water-bearing strata can require multiple stages of pumping, with smaller pumps at lower levels discharging into larger pumps higher up, effectively creating a lift chain. Iron mines and some hard-rock operations have historically run pitwork continuously at high volumes to stay ahead of spring melt or seasonal aquifer rise.
Why pumps fail and what happens
Pitwork breaks down through wear of impellers and casings by abrasive particles in mine water, corrosion from acidic or mineral-rich inflows, and mechanical failure of bearings and seals under continuous duty. A stalled pump can allow the pit to rise by several feet per hour, forcing suspension of mining work and risking equipment submersion. For this reason, pitwork was traditionally kept running 24 hours a day even during halt periods, and installed with redundancy: a main pump and a smaller standby pump on the same suction line.
The term 'pitwork' is archaic in modern mining but remains embedded in technical literature and in the vocabulary of heritage mining sites. It reflects the era when mines were defined by their pits (shafts sunk vertically into the earth) and when pumping was the dominant capital investment after shaft sinking itself. In contemporary practice, the same function is often called simply 'mine drainage' or 'dewatering', with pitwork retained as a historical descriptor or when referring to the complete installed system rather than individual pumps.
